From its modest beginning in 1568, the seminary grew quickly in size and influence under Allen's able leadership until by the end of Elizabeth's reign it had produced well over four hundred priests. 19 The first of these young seminary priests, as they were called, arrived in England as early as 1574, and others continued to come in increasing numbers.
