Moreover, despite limited success in raising funds for Queenwood, Owen's vision became steadily more grandiose. In 1842 much of the money raised for the community was spent on constructing an impressively large building with lavish fittings, such as a model kitchen with a conveyor to carry food and dishes to and from the dining-room, which was more advanced, its architect claimed, than that in any London hotel.
The progress of his career was meteoric. By 1790, at the age of nineteen, he had acquired from loans, his savings, and a fortuitous partnership three spinning-machines worked by three labourers. When the position of manager of the first large cotton-spinning mill fell open, however, Owen offered his services. 3 Elected to the prestigious Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, he began to acquire a degree of social polish and, struggling to overcome his youthful shyness, spoke for the first time before a public meeting.
Here he found that an Owenite consumer co-operative society had been started in Edinburgh which made goods available more cheaply to its members, but also aimed to buy land for a settlement. Moreover, a community modelled on Owen's ideals, at Orbiston, south of Glasgow, had in fact been attempted by the Edinburgh tanner Abram Combe. This brought together 300 people for several years before collapsing, largely through an inability to produce quickly enough to repay its creditors. Combe himself died after overexerting himself at spade agriculture.
