Like Myrdal, Drake and Cayton considered the importance of the war to, in their phrase, ‘advancing the race’. ’43 It is significant that both Myrdal’s and Drake and Cayton’s enormous studies came into print in the heart of the war years. While some may have wished that such controversial works had been kept under wraps until after the war, the domestic crises described therein persisted despite international conflict or the need to present to the world a united, democratic front; as both texts point out, the war did not exist on a separate plane from such internal affairs but profoundly affected, and was affected by, race relations in the United States.
When material supply to a beleaguered faction was no longer a business arrangement between private parties but a matter of national policy – as with Roosevelt’s cash-and-carry and lend-lease arrangements, which allowed the Allies at first to buy and then to receive on credit essential rations and materiel – total engagement was an even more likely possibility. Embargoes carried the added moral taint, which military engagement did not, of hitting civilian populations harder than their well-padded armed forces.
Reverend Tanimoto was helping a neighbour to move his possessions to an outlying area, Ms Sasaki was just beginning work; and Mrs Nakamura was awake but worn out by a night disturbed by multiple air raids.
